Why every jewelry collection needs evergreen pieces

I’ve designed many pieces of jewelry in the last 20 years. Trend-led. Experimental. Slightly optimistic…

Some of those designs were fun to make, but the pieces that paid my bills were always the same sort and still are actually – the sort of evergreen pieces people buy when they want a gift they know will hit the mark.

What I actually mean by ‘evergreen’ pieces

By evergreen, I don’t mean dusty or dated. I mean the kinds of pieces people have been gifting for years or even centuries, because they already carry years of meaning – the little twist is – you interpret the design and make it into your own style and version. Adding a fresh new angle to a timeless jewelry piece.

Why these pieces quietly sell

Many people aren’t shopping for jewelry to make a statement. They’re shopping because there’s a reason – a birthday, a new baby, a trip, a milestone. And in those moments, familiar, trusted pieces feel like the safest choice.

The trick most makers miss

One of the biggest mistakes I see is skipping these key pieces altogether. It can feel more exciting to design the “fun” stuff, but leaving traditional pieces out of your collection is quietly missing a trick. Whether you’re just starting out or you’ve been selling for years, these pieces tend to provide the most reliable, steady sales in the background.

Evergreen pieces rarely steal the spotlight, but they’re usually the ones holding everything together. Get those right, in your own way, and the rest of your collection suddenly feels a lot easier to build around.

If you’d like a clearer starting point, I’ve put together a short, practical guide to the evergreen jewelry pieces that form the backbone of a jewelry collection…
